Overview

The aim is to design a series of User Interfaces (UI) that serve children at hospitals with modalities like visual screen interaction and motion.

Problem

The experience of children at hospitals is usually a very traumatic experience, they are vulnerable to stress, feeling lonely, scared, and confused about why they are at the hospital and why they had to go through all this pain. Trying to adapt to their condition of illness and the hospitalization itself may be a struggle, in addition to this, they also have limited chances of socializing with friends and peers. So, our challenge is to make children's experiences at the hospital less traumatic and lonely and find a way for them to stay connected.

1. Research

Analysis of the Painpoints

1. Commonly confused in need of an explanation of what they will be exposed to in a manner that fits their level of maturity.

2. They are scare of the situation and fear medical procedures.

3. They get bored while waiting in the rooms for the doctor or nurse.

4. Separation & Sleep Anxiety as they are taken away from the safe and empathetic environment of their home. They need their families' support more than ever.

5. Possibility of negative psychological consequences throughout their recovery, such as nightmares, irritability, and aggressiveness. They refuse recovery time because it is not a fun or enjoyable activity.

6. They are particularly vulnerable to stress while they are adapting to their condition of illness and hospitalization.

7. Illness and hospitalization are traumatic, anxiety-provoking and can lead to transient or long-term behavioral and psychological difficulties in the future.

8. Worried about keeping up with schoolwork, also sad over missing out on school activities, and having a limited chance of socializing with their friends and peers.

The Ten Commandments

1. The hospital's management is focused on the children, they are accepting and empathic providing them with an environment that is safe and child-friending.

2. Hospitals should provide spaces and time for children to explore their curiosity and imagination with engaging infrastructure and more playful learning areas.

3. The hospitals need to create a community feeling between the children, families, doctors, and the medical staff. It should allow possible interactions with friends and family.

4. Hospitals must innovate in new ways to treat children and be updated with the latest technological advances in every field even outside medical studies.

5. Children and families must understand the process and staff members must be empathetic to their situation. Sharing the decision-making with parents and most importantly the children, using simple language to explain diagnosis for children.

6. Children must feel in control of the situation and believe they have the power of choosing for them.

7. Hospitals must teach children and give them a learning and motivational experience that will help them in the future.

8. Engage children in group play activities to ease the psychological burden of hospitalization.

9. The hospitals ensure fun memories and cultural adventures while going through tough times. Promoting values in a society like equality, respect, and fairness.

10. Create a positive vibe around them will praise them when they do well, recognition of their efforts and achievements, and encouragement to talk about how they feel.

How might we make children's experience at the hospital less lonely and find a way for them to stay connected?
